What types of memories are in computers?

Computer Components

Before we talk about computers memories, let us, dear readers, know what a computer is. A computer is an electronic machine that receives and processes valuable information and performs complex arithmetic and logical operations. The computer also stores various information and data in various storage media. The computer can exchange this information and data with other compatible devices.

The computer consists of the following basic parts:

  • Monitor
  • Motherboard
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU)
  • Random Access Memory (RAM)
  • Hard Disk
  • Read First Memory (ROM)
  • DVD and CD reader
  • Power Generator

Types of memories in computers

There are many types of memories in a computer that are used to store data and information and also help in carrying out operations, below we will describe computers memories.

Types of memories in computers are as follows:

  • Main memory or RAM (Random Access Memory) is used to store data temporarily so that the processor and various programs can access it quickly. This memory works to save data temporarily, and once you stop or restart the computer, all this data is lost.
  • ROM (Only Memory), as this memory contains fixed data that the user cannot make any change or modification to. Read-only memory is used to store boot programs and system information.
  • EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory), as its primary function is to allow the process of erasing and reprogramming the data stored in it by using ultraviolet light. Erasable software memory is used in applications that require frequent modifications and is considered a type of read-only memory.
  • EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory), through which the data stored in it can be erased and reprogrammed, but this time using electrical signals. This memory is used in small electronic devices as well as portable storage devices. It is also considered a type of read-only memory.
  • Fixed and temporary storage memory.
  • Virtual Memory.

Types of main memory (Random Access Memory – RAM)

  • DRAM (Dynamic Random-Access Memory). This type is considered among the most common in computers. Capacitor technology is used to store data and requires data renewal regularly to maintain the electrical charge.
  • SRAM (Static Random-Access Memory). Transistor switches are used to store data in this type, but this type requires more space and is also more expensive than the DRAM type.
  • SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory), this type is considered an advanced type of DRAM memory. It uses the same technology used in DRAM, which is capacitor technology, but with the data synchronization feature, and is used in modern computers as it provides faster speeds than DRAM.
  • DDR SDRAM (Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory), is considered an advanced version of SDRAM in which double data transfer technology is applied so that high speeds are obtained. There are several versions of DDR SDRAM such as DDR2, DDR3, and DDR4.

This was a quick review of the most important memories used in a computer (computers memories), whether it is a desktop or personal computer.
